Write a brief post that explains how and why your new process is digital using Peters ideas about the three qualities that all digital technologies share. How does it illustrate McLuhan’s idea of media extending your senses?  (THIS IS NOT AN EXERCISE IN 2021)

My remediated gift giving process resulted in a smart phone application that resolved the problem of giving and receiving gifts while physically away from the person and they were not able to be in contact with them. The app includes surveys and delivery options that would be accepted by the receiver at a certain time on a specified day to ensure seamless and on time delivery, while the app will also send notifications providing enough time to buy and deliver the gift regardless of where they are in the world. This remediated process can be analysed as digital using Peters’ (2016) concept that digital technologies all count to the symbolic, points towards the real and can open up and manipulates the social possibilities, while also proving that digital technologies extend the senses, as described by McLuhan (2005). 

The remediated process conveys Peters’ (2016) interpretation of the digital counting the symbolic. All media are “digital in the simple sense that humans interface with them digitally, or with our fingers via manual manipulation and push buttons”, (Peters 2016, p. 98) which directly correlates to the symbolic questions asked in the app that physically inputted and result in the digital counting of data. This produces a symbolic profile that enables the gift receiver to firstly digitally accept the gift, and then finally receive the gift in person.  

Additionally, the remediated app points toward the real as described by Peters (2016, p. 98) that digital media “point and refer to real- world objects outside of themselves”. The creation of a digital profile and delivery schedule point to a profile that represents the receiver. The notifications sent to both the giver and receiver would point to the real as “the end relationship between the digital profiles of the contacts in your phone and the real- world people you know, or between the symbolic and the real, would be— as it always has been— indexical, not computational,” conveyed by Peters (2016, p. 101). 

Peters’ third quality requires digital technologies to manipulate elements of social reality, explaining that they “combine into new tool suites capable of profound acts of social manipulation, handling, and management”, (Peters 2016, p. 98). My remediated process identifies the digital manipulation in the real-world delivery experience, while allowing users to manipulate the acceptance of the gift giving process.
