Ceramics Used in Modern Aerospace Industries Carefully read the below text and answer the following questions: It is strongly suggested to refer to the lecture notes, recommended textbooks, and other literature in formulating your answers. It is not necessary to use question numbers, but make sure to provide sufficient explanations to cover the questions. You may use figures, diagrams and tables to illustrate your answer and provide citations and references, where necessary
a) Discuss the advantages of using ceramics in aircraft parts and structures.
b) Investigate the extent of usage of ceramics in airspace.
c) Compare the use of ceramics in aircraft with traditional materials used for older versions of aircraft. It is required to compare strength, durability and other key properties and quote suitable examples of components for which these different materials are used.
d) Investigate the limitations of using ceramics in aircraft
Strengthening of Materials
The strength and hardness of some metal alloys may be enhanced by the formation of extremely small, uniformly dispersed particles of a second phase within the original phase matrix. This must be accomplished by phase transformations that are induced by appropriate heat treatments. The process is called precipitation hardening because the small particles of the new phase are termed precipitates.
Use the above explanation and the graphs to answer the following questions.
a) A solution heat-treated 2014 Aluminium alloy is to be precipitation hardened to have a minimum yield strength of 360 MPa and a ductility of at least 12%EL
b) Copper-rich copper–beryllium alloys are precipitation harden-able. After consulting the portion of the phase diagram shown in Figure 2.2, do the following:
It is required to select suitable material/s for an engineering application that satisfies the following requirements:
a) Use the first two Ashby charts (below) or to select a set of materials that satisfy these requirements.
b) Use the third Ashby chart, standard textbook and/or any other resource to refine your selection to present three best materials if the following additional requirements are also to be fulfilled.
i. Corrosion resistance
ii. Low cost
iii. Sustainability
Deliver a minute presentation The requirements are as follows:
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the following topic. “Explain the selection process of a tough and light material from the Ashby Charts for any loading conditions”.
