Highlights
Description
This essay is an individual assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to contribute to student awareness, knowledge, and understanding of strategic staffing methodologies (ULO 1), in particular forecasting and human resource planning, and to consider the impact of emerging labour market trends and workplace evolutions on the staffing function (ULO 2). In doing this, you will build specialist knowledge related to staffing and human resource planning (GLO 1), and also build skills in critical thinking (GLO 4) and self-management (GLO 6). These skills and competencies are also relevant for assessment 2.
Via three questions, you are asked to describe and critically evaluate the role of Human Resource Planning (HRP) in relation to strategic staffing. Each question will require a separate reflection which, combined with an introduction and conclusion, should result in a 2,500-word total essay. More specifically, your task will be to critically reflect on following three questions:
(1) Why should HRP be considered a key component of an organization’s strategic staffing process?
(2) What do you believe will be the main staffing-related challenges that organizations will face in the short (1-2 years), mid-term (3-5 years), and long term (next 5-10 years)?
(3) How can HRP support organizations in preparing for these challenges?
This assessment requires students to apply and demonstrate critical analysis while writing on the topic of strategic staffing. In completing the assessment, imagine you are writing this essay for an HRM outlet like HRM magazine or the Asia Pacific Journal of HR. Your goal is to critically evaluate the role of HRP in the staffing process and to inform HR and industry professionals on how HRP can be utilized to tackle emerging staffing challenges in the short, mid-term, and long term. Examples of staffing-related challenges may include managing an ageing workforce, increasing diversity within the organization, navigating change, or finding appropriately skilled employees. Note that this assessment goes beyond simply formulating an opinion. Rather, I would expect you to make a series of informed statements in relation to these questions, and that you express your point of view in light of what you know about the topic ? based on analysing, interpreting, and evaluating evidence from relevant sources.
Specific Requirements
You are expected to submit a well-presented academic piece of writing, with clear language and correct grammar. The reflections will be written in structured form, but you are NOT required to re-write the questions. Instead you are required to present a piece of writing that flows in answering the questions. Your work will not be marked if it is not presented effectively. A detailed overview of the assessment standards can be found on the last page of this document.
