Assessment tasks Before moving to set out the two tasks that make up this assignment, there is something to note about the allotted word limits. The first task has a limit of 2,500 words, and is to be written in a standard essay format (i.e., an introduction, body and conclusion). In addressing the questions asked in the first task, the answers provided should be appropriately cited and carry a reference section in the usual manner. The number of words should also approximate the allocated word limit within a margin of 10 per cent, excluding the wording contained in the reference section. The second task has a 1,000 word limit, but much depends on how you choose to answer the questions it asks. It is conceivable that they may be addressed with anywhere between 500 and 1,000 words, depending how you decide to present your calculations and any associated commentary. In short, it is not necessary to exhaust the entirety of the words available to fulfil the requirements of this second task. Nor should it be necessary to go beyond the word limit.

Task 1 (30 marks – 2,500 word limit, excluding the reference section) In recent years there have been a growing number of well-publicised ‘wage theft’ scandals involving some of Australia’s major firms (e.g., 7-Eleven, Caltex, Coles, Pizza Hut, Target, Woolworths). The first task of this assignment seeks to put you in touch with this issue, which is becoming one of considerable concern for policy-makers, institutions charged regulating the employment relationship, as well as the public more generally. To this end, you are required to answer the following four questions

: - What forms does wage theft take?

- What statistics are available to suggest that wage theft is a problem in Australia?

- What factors have been noted by authoritative sources as contributing to the problem of wage theft?

- What solutions have been put forward or enacted to reduce the problem of wage theft?

Task 2 (20 marks – 500-1,000 word limit, excluding the reference section) The second task of this assignment involves reading a modern award as a means of calculating an employee’s wage over a working week. It thus provides a practical exercise related to a labour contract regulated under the Fair Work Act 2009. Being familiar with these types of legal instruments has benefits if you are an employee, for it will allow you to understand what your legal entitlements are when in paid employment. It will also be important in your professional role if you engaged as a manager of labour. The scenario set out below involves an employee working in a particular industry over a given week. Based on the information provided in the scenario, you are first required to identify which modern award applies to the employee in question, and which job category within the chosen award best describes the employee’s work role. Having identified the applicable award and job category, you are then required to answer the questions listed at the conclusion of the scenario. So doing, you are required to set the components and associated calculations used to reach answers. This can be done in a tabular or point form, and if necessary explanatory commentary might also be included to guide the reader through the reasoning applied in reaching your conclusions
