Assessment Description

Class Participation and Contribution

During the laboratories and tutorials students will discuss various issues and concepts explored in this unit.  Active student participation in the laboratories and tutorials is essential to the learning process.  All students are expected to be prepared for and contribute to the laboratories and tutorial discussions.  This includes having completed the set weekly reading before attending the laboratories and tutorial.

To assist in your understanding of the theory and application of this unit, you are encouraged to contribute to class discussions.  Your participation and interaction with other students is a major and very important component of the learning process.  Part of your participation will also be based upon your ability to recognise and examine issues and you are encouraged to examine current issues and to bring in relevant articles for tutorial discussions.

Students are expected to contribute and participate actively in weekly online Moodle activities, such as using discussion forums, wiki, chats or other tools. Students are also strongly encouraged to take the lead and facilitate active communication and interaction among their peers enrolled in this unit and academics.    The online discussion forums, wiki, chats and other tools allow students to continue classroom discussions, explore unit material and readings together, share insights and ideas in their free time outside class hours.  Academic staff may set weekly discussion forum topics with which students are expected to engage. Contributions to online discussion forums and other online tools must be focused on the specific unit and observe online etiquette and MIT policy rules regarding courtesy and respect.

Adherence to this requirement will be continuously monitored by the academics outside the class hours and reflected in the marks awarded for this assessment. Since 10% of your grade relies on this, you will be graded on your participation throughout the trimester.  Please note that your Lecturer/Tutor will grade the quality of your interaction, not necessarily the quantity.  Participation in this unit will be recorded and compiled. In fact, too much mindless participation hurts the class flow and can therefore impact your grade.
