This module takes a structured approach to the study of strategic management in organisations. A range of analytical tools and techniques are covered by the modules that are applicable in many organisational contexts. Students will practice these techniques on a number of case study organisations and build up a holistic understanding of the process of strategic analysis.

Strategy is a field that has undergone considerable development and encompasses a number of theoretical approaches. These will also be explored by students to develop a critical appreciation of the eclectic nature of strategy and its underpinning theoretical assumptions. Analytical techniques and models explored here will allow students to acquire the ability to understand the external environments in which organisations operate. At the same time the strategic capabilities of organisations is considered, including notions of culture and competence as well as more tangible resources. Finally, the reaction of stakeholders to strategic decisions is evaluated, before moving on to the selection of appropriate strategic options going into the future.

Due to the practical nature of this module it is essential we create the right learning environment. This means you need to read (as a minimum) the recommended readings prior to each lecture each week, prepare homework and take part in seminar activity. It’s certainly true what they say “the more you put in the more you get out” and we really hope we are all able to create a great learning environment; which means more fun, better understanding, analysis and application; and therefore hopefully higher grades.
