As a science professional you will be required to provide concise, critically examined information on a topic in medical science, supported by correctly cited, peer reviewed, authoritative references. You will often be asked to provide your opinion on the quality, value and significance of a piece of scientific work, be it a report, journal publication, presentation, method, media article etc. In this task you are asked to give your opinion on a scientific journal article that is within your topic area and was used as source material when you were preparing your presentation. What you write is not just a review of the topic or a reiteration of what is in the paper, it is a critical analysis of the paper to determine if the work, as it is written up in the paper, is significant, innovative, and valid.
The paper you analyse must be a primary research paper, it cannot be a review, commentary or opinion article.
During semester we will look at various types of Medical Science articles and discuss ways in which we can critically assess them. These sessions will help you in your evaluation of articles for both the presentation and the critical review.
The Subject coordinators will be able to give you some advice on whether the article you have chosen is appropriate, but you must ask early.
