Please read the assignment case study concerning Zaynab Ahmed and then complete each task.

 

Case Study:
Zaynab Ahmed FAMILY CASE STUDY
Zaynab is 14. She has been known to social services since she was ten years old. Her mother, Sairah died when Zaynab was ten. She lives with her father, Mo and her younger brother Ali aged 11 who has autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Mo struggled to cope after his wife died. Mo and Zaynab have a difficult relationship and often argue. Mo finds it difficult to deal with Zaynab’s behaviour which is often erratic. He feels that Zaynab does not respect him and is leading Ali astray. He sometimes sends Ali to his parents which upsets Ali and Zaynab who are close. A year after Sairah died, Mo began a relationship with Nahida. Zaynab does not like Nahida. She refuses to speak to Nahida when she visits and spend most of the time in her room.
Zaynab has regularly been missing school, staying out late and coming home drunk. Mo suspects that Zaynab may have a boyfriend who is older than her but she won’t talk to him about it. The family are of Pakistani Muslim heritage. The family regularly attended the Mosque when Mo’s wife Sairah was alive. Mo owns a small business but he has some mobility issues due to an accident in his twenties and he cannot always work due chronic pain.

  • Analyse Zaynab needs at the different stages of her lifecycle to date.
  • Knowledge and understanding of individual needs, such as Bowlby’s argument that children need, for example, a secure base. How needs, and unmet needs, can influence development
  • Ability to analyse the needs at different stages of the lifecycle using a wide range of resources.
  • Ability to analyse how the dynamics of race/ethnicity/culture/poverty may impact or influence development.

  •  Identify theories of identity including gender/race/ethnicity/culture/socioeconomic situation/disability
  •  Discuss Zaynab’s needs; say why it is a need and the consequences of her needs not being met

Task 3 Apply theories of lifecycle development 
Choose one theory that is relevant to explain the dynamics of the family focusing on Zaynab. Outline and assess how this theory helps inform the professionals’ discussion for the Strategy meeting.

Assessment criteria

  • Knowledge and understanding of either: John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth’s ideas (Attachment Theory) OR Erik Erikson’s theory of Psychosocial Development.
  • Ability to apply the theory to Zaynab’s lifecycle and situation.
  • Ability to consider possible limitations to the theory.

Points to consider
Select one of the following lifecycle development theories. Either Bowlby’s attachment theory, which Mary Ainsworth built upon (they were collaborators) or Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development. Your chosen theory should be discussed and applied to Zaynab’s situation and development.
