Highlights
Task:
For this assignment, you are requested to provide a report of no more than 3,000 words excluding tables and figures. You will play the role of a hydrological modeller in a small consultancy. In particular, you will determine the impact of contaminant leakage from a tank and groundwater pumping over time on the unconfined aquifer and area represented in Figure 1, via means of Processing Modflow (PMWIN).
Site input data
The case study area is 50 m wide (W) and 70 m long (L), with a total depth of 8 m (H). The aquifer is in a 7 m deep layer (Hw), located at 1 m from the top surface. The whole H layer is homogeneous. Soil type is silt and sand with porosity of 25%, hydraulic conductivity of 1 m/day, longitudinal dispersivity of 1 m and with a soil bulk density, ρb=2500 kg/m3 . The aquifer has a gradient of 0.002 with groundwater flow east to west oriented, and a water level ranging from 7 m (east) and 6.8 m (west). A well (Pw1) pumping with a water flow rate of Q=200 L/day is located at the coordinates (x;y;z)=(25; 25; 8). A tank (1 m long x 1 m wide x 1 m high), located at the coordinates (x;y;z)=(40; 20; 8), stores fertilisers containing a high concentration of chloride (Cl = 2000 mg/L). Cl is a recognised essential element for plants but is listed among contaminants that may cause cosmetic damage (such as skin or tooth discoloration) or aesthetic effects (such as taste, odor, or color) in drinking water. Cl leaks into the subsurface from a 0.5 m2 hole on the bottom of the tank (Figure 1). Using the site characteristics and input data given above, predict and map the contaminant plume movement over time. Evaluate if the obtained concentrations meet the National Secondary Drinking Water Regulations (NSDWRs). Address the following questions in your predictions, citing evidence from the simulation (i.e. plots and/or diagrams) and literature to support your explanation. For unspecified data, use default data values provided by PMWIN software.
