Assignment Task :

Overview
Understanding the models of health-related behaviour enables us to begin to understand why people behave the way they do when it comes to their health. This assessment task will evaluate your understanding of how the Health Belief Model (HBM) may be applied to the case study below and how you might address each construct of the model to encourage Bob achieve healthier behavioural outcomes regarding his eating and weight.

The Case
Bob is a 30-year-old single male living in Blacktown. He works as a construction worker and his co-workers are quite concerned about his health. Bob eats a high carbohydrate and trans-fats diet, mostly consisting of fast food on-the-go. When asked about eating more healthily, he claims "that is all he has bloody time for", adding "blokes would probably drag me if I ate rabbit food [salad]". He has a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 and has been complaining about chest pains and shortness of breath for the past three weeks. Bob refuses to see a doctor because he feels the chest pain is "probably nothing serious". However, Bob has a known family history of cardiovascular illness, with his father and paternal uncle dying in their late fifties from sudden heart attacks. He feels though that his weight is impacting on his self-esteem and motivation to meet a romantic partner. At a "General Health and Wellbeing Day" at work, he took some pamphlets on healthy eating plans, but these have been sitting on his kitchen bench for the last fortnight, unread.
