Modern Media is to Blame for Lowering Literacy Levels

The levels of literacy are the different phases a child goes through during the basic process of learning to read and write. There are four levels of literacy, which are functional literacy, basic, proficient and advanced literacy. In our current generation, technology is being more advanced and efficient. Majority of the population are using modern media such as: internet, social media, email and podcast to conduct their work and people are learning new things from the media. Therefore, I disagree that modern media is to be blame for lowering literacy levels.

Firstly, The National Literacy Trust has studied and found that social networking sites such as: Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and Twitter has educational benefits and facilitates learning. Social networking and blogs has impact and help students to develop a positive attitude towards writing and to become more confident in their writing abilities. Not only that, the study also showed that students who write blogs and literature on a social networking site, tends to be more confident about their writing ability which could potentially improve their writing skills.

Secondly, it helps both students and adults to learn to think critically. This is because as they evaluate the media, they decide whether the messages make sense. For example: “why certain information was included”, what wasn’t included” and “what was the main ideas. They learn to use examples to support their key points and their own opinions. Then they can make up their own minds about the information that they already have processed based on their knowledge. This could improve students and adult’s ability to read and to understand the new information that they have processed, so that they could use the key points to write properly and carefully.

Lastly, using the internet such as: Google, Safari, Wikipedia and many more has helped people to have access to more knowledge as they write. This is because people could surf the internet to find appropriate examples or verify facts to improve their essay writing. The ability to access different views on a topic rapidly can also help us to refine our own views. This shows that students could easily develop new ideas as they get inspired by the things they read online and apply those ideas in their own writing to enhanced the quality of their essay writing.

In Conclusion, Modern Media is not to be blame for lowering literacy levels. One of the ways that modern media could help students and adult’s to improve its writing skills is that it could monitor and correct language mechanics. This means that there are built-in support like autocorrect and browser extensions like Grammarly which are useful in helping students to identify errors in their language mechanics. Another way is that the media can collect and digitally frame their best work. When students are satisfied and proud of the work they have done, they love seeing it published. Additionally, knowing something that will be published online for others to see can potentially motivate students to improve and produce better work.
