Task
Students are to develop two separate 3.5x3.5x3.5m spatial volumes using a modular and separately a monolithic construction system. With reference to the Serpentine Pavilions in Kensington Gardens (London) and the MPavilion in Queen Victoria Gardens (Melbourne), these spatial volumes are to have no specific function or program other than 'a space to gather and provide shelter'. There is no specific site for the spatial volumes, and it is to be assumed to be on level ground, in a public park on Gadigal Country.
Separate to AT1, students are not to use Gen.Ai and are to use a wide variety of references to develop both their Modular and separately their Monolithic pavilions.
A digital copy of the document must be uploaded to CANVAS prior to 2359 on the day of the assessment deadline. Student must submit a digital copy of their work with all specified deliverables prior to the specified time. In addition, students must be in attendance to the studio session prior to the commencement of the class time. If a student is late in their submission or attendance (even by 1 second) they will be marked as late, and a -5% will be applied to their grade for this assessment.
Brief + Controls
All structures, cladding overhangs, projections etc. must fit within a 3.5m x 3.5m x 3.5m building envelope.
- For Modular Pavilion: the primary structural/ construction system for the final design must be from the ‘modular’ list below. Concrete pad/strip footings are permissible. Elemental systems for roof, ceiling, and accessibility systems are permissible.
- For Monolithic Pavilion: the primary structural/ construction system for the final design must be from the ‘monolithic’ list below.
- A minimum of one internal wall is be included in the pavilions. Each pavilion must show a clear distinction between a clear external wall construction and a internal wall construction.
- Both pavilions must include an external window/opening. For the Modular pavilion this can be a section of Hit-and-Miss brick/block work.
- Both pavilions must include access (stairs and ramps) provisions that meet with the NCC and Australian Standards. The ramp and stairs can be located outside of the 3.5 x 3.5m building envelope.
- No landing or internal horizontal plane can be over 1m above the ground level. - The design must demonstrate an understanding of rainwater management and waterproofing issues. - The design must comply with the NCC and relevant Australian Standards.
- The design must relate to the students selected design references, documented in week 8 (Modular) and week 10 (Monolithic).
For this task, students will utilise Modular and Monolithic Construction Systems to design two separate pavilions:

- A-Mod-20-01 2x 1:20 Sections. The sections are to show all of the construction systems utilised in the design of the pavilion from ground -to- sky. At least one of the sections is to be through the whole pavilion showing the interior, while the second can be a partial section only focusing on the external edge. In addition, at least one of the sections must be through an opening (window/ doorway/threshold) in the building.

Massing Models:
- 8x 1:50 Massing Models (4x Modular + 4x Monolithic) iterating the initial Precedent images. The iterative massing models are to be constructed by hand using balsa wood or white card. The models are to be focused on the external form of the pavilion and refining/adapting the initial precedent images to be something that can be documented using either the modular or monolithic construction system.
- Images of models to be documented using the level 2 photography studio or a clean backdrop - Images to be incorporated into a single .pdf file submitted to Canvas

Presentation Model
1x 1:10 Detail Model of a portion of the finalised designs (Modular + Monolithic). The model is s are to show a selected junction between wall-to-floor or wall-to-roof or internal wall-to-external wall, highlighting the construction systems and the layering of materials that form that portion of the pavilions design. Unlike AT1, only a small portion of the overall design is to be modelled. ’Cut-away’ details should be incorporated into the models so that the laying of materials can be clearly seen.
The Each model (1x Modular + 1x Monolithic) are is to be constructed on a 100 x 100mm base and have a minimum height constraint of 100mm. Similar to the massing models, images of the final presentation model is to be part of the digital submission to Canvas.
Part B
Submission Format : 2x Canvas quizzes with associated image uploads + digital copy of lecture notes
Sketchbook:
- Scan / Upload of lecture notes. Students are to document the lectures in both text, sketches and diagrams. A clear date and lecture title is to be recorded at the beginning of each new set of notes.
- Scan / Upload of sketches. Other than the sketches uploaded as part of the quizzes on Canvas, students can upload additional sketches to illustrate their learning of construction systems.
2x Canvas quizzes:
Students must complete all quizzes prior to the assessment deadline. Quizzes are accessible on Canvas and links to upload the drawings required
