Case : Cases of Meningitis W (Meningococcal group W) have been rising steeply in England and Wales. In 2014/15 Meningitis W accounted for 24% of cases of meningococcal disease compared to only 1-2% in 2008/09 (PHE 2015). This rise is due to a virulent strain of the bacteria. Since August 2015 all 14-18 year olds are being offered the one-off catch-up vaccine campaign due to the rapid rise in Meningitis W. The Meningitis ACWY vaccine offers protection against four types of bacteria that can cause meningitis (Meningococcal groups A, C, W, Y).
