Monte Carlo Simulations:
The purpose of this exercise is to utilize the Casino Monte Carlo program to examine and project the electronsgenerated via specimen/beam interaction. You are to download this free program and carry out the following exercises and then tum in the answers as well as the simulations themselves.

Downbad the Casino program and install from the website: http://www.gel.usherbrooke.cakasino/What.html
Downbad and extract VERSION 2.5.1.0
DO NOT download the later version 3.
The website hasan online tutorial on howto use the program. When downloading it requires an email address and affiliation, please use NewJersey City University.
To run a simulation:
1. Click on File, then New. 2. A separate dialog windowopens up. Click on Add Layer. 3. Double Click on Undefined to open a new Dialog Window. 4. In the Composition dialog window, enteryourelement. Rememberyou mustuse the standard for the periodic table or the program will not recognize your request. (Cfor carbon, Au for gold). 5. Click Done. 6. Dialog box disappears, Click Next. 7. A new dialog window opens. 8. Check off the box Simulate Multiple Energies. 9. In the Start Window, enteryourstarting Acceleratingvoltage, in the End Window, enter your ending Acceleratingvoltage. In the Stepswindow, enterthe increment thatyou want the steps to go in (i.e.: 5kV with a start of Sand an End of 30 will run the following energies: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.) 10. If the question asksfora tilt, enterthe tilt degrees. 11. If the question asksfor Beam radius, then enterthe beam radius. 12. Click on Finish. 13. When the Begin Simulation dialog box opens, dick Yes. 14. When the simulation finishes, you can look at each simulation by clicking on the kV so that it is highlighted.
To see the entire simulation:
The simulation is not scaled so that all of the flight patterns are displayed. To see the entire pattern, go to View and then dick on Auto-Adjust Scale.
To save a simulation:
1. Click on File. 2. Click on Save As. 3. Enter the file name you wish to save it as.
Remember that Secondary electrons are not shown. Red indicates Backscatter Electrons, and Blue indicates X-rays generated. Both showtheir theoreticalflight path. Depending on the entry and radius of the beam ente ring the sample, you can extrapolate and imagine where the secondary's, whetherthey be SEI's or SE2's would leave the surface of the sample to be picked up.
