Abstract
The study is exploring the infidelity acceptance level in society today, as the issue became a global concern, and the technology turned into a facilitator for extradyadic behaviours. Infidelity generally involves an emotional or sexual affiliation with someone other than the partner, but there are many omnipresent borders that once crossed, are interpreted as betrayal. Biological and evolutionary basis, biochemical processes, personality traits and gender differences can explain face to face infidelity, but advancements in technology have developed new channels to engage in infidelity and there is a gap in understanding human acceptance levels towards different mediums and infidelity variety. The study focused on heterosexual individuals and implemented a mixed between-within participants scenario based experimental design. The sample was randomly divided into three main groups. The examined variable was the acceptance towards infidelity score. There were three independent variables (IV); first IV was the cheating character, with three levels: male, female, and own partner (IM), second IV was the channel of cheating with two levels: online and face to face (RM), and the third was participant’s gender with two levels: male and female (IM). Infidelity of an emotional or sexual nature was decided to be analysed by conducting two separate analysis, which resulted in planning for two three-way BBW Analysis of variance (ANOVA). It is predicted that there will be significant differences in the acceptance level between gender regarding face-to-face infidelity and online infidelity, gender regarding the cheating character (a fictive male character, a fictive woman character, or own partner in a fictive scenario) and gender regarding type of infidelity (emotional or sexual), mainly interested in online medium, as this is not an aspect often regarded in the past studies. Significant interactions between the IVs and their levels regarding the rated acceptance level are also forecasted.
The data is still being analysed; the analysis is not concluded yet. All the relevant information about the sample and the results, including the discussion of the results and limitations, will be made available once the study is completed.
