Background

The changing nature of the workplace In the1990’s the workplace was predominantly stable with many staff staying with the organisation or with a view to for life. In 2017, this traditional career arrangement is challenged. Rather, today the workforce has less full time employees and more contractors, part time, shared roles, people working remotely and casual workers employed on a needs or demand basis. As well, the nature of work has also changing, due mainly to higher levels of technology, while disruptive innovations are creating new industries and business models, and destroying old ones. In truth, many of the roles and job titles of tomorrow will be ones we’ve not even thought of yet. Given these changes there are many implications for workplace skills and so also for management? Artificial intelligence is a big change, so is robotics. Where do you fit in?

The Task (individual):

Critically discuss the case study selected for the presentation topic. Tip 1: Explain the relevant case study in relation to the concept – such as leadership, motivation etc., Tip 2: Discuss its implications/ lessons for staff performance and for management; select 1-2 W& related topics to illustrate impact/ lessons - such as motivation, productivity (or whatever), with supporting research (citations required); Tip 3: Evaluate (do not just list ideas or describe superficially) the issue – so question, challenge Tip 4: Use research - the text, plus a minimum of 5 x recent (2010 onwards) journal articles (not Google or Wiki) Step 1: Read the Assessment rubric – Appendix 1. Step 2: Locate and read some recent (2010 onwards) journal articles to support your report – there are some readings on VU Collaborate (Readings – Assignment One), but you’re expected to find more current journal articles. Step 3: Using your research to support your views, address the following points: Use your research of the selected case in the group presentation (assignment 3) to address the following points: 1. Provide a short review of important issues (from the selected case) arising in relation to the topic and explain why these are important. 2. Critique the case in light of the changed/changing workplace a. Identify any strains, dilemmas and contradictions facing management 3. Finally, as a manager, draw some evaluative conclusions on things you will need to know and do in order to survive and thrive in this uncertain future?
