Highlights
Context
In general, the movement of tides is a sinusoidal function, so both the speed of movement of the water and the height of the water do not follow a linear relationship. Since the apparent movement of the sun and the movement of the moon around the Earth are not synchronous, the tide heights themselves vary periodically over the lunar month. Thus the amplitude of the tides can vary significantly from one day to the next. Furthermore, along shorelines, the slope can determine how obvious the horizontal tidal movement is to the eye.
Task
Write a report that compares the water movement of different incoming tidal periods using data collected from a location of your choice. You will:
? Use data to develop a function for each incoming tidal period that models the water height at any time during the incoming tidal period.
? Provide a mathematical analysis of each incoming tidal period that includes:
– when and at what height the tidal height is changing the fastest and slowest
– when and at what height the tidal height is accelerating the most and least – how the slope of the shore impacts the horizontal movement of water.
