Document Purpose
The document is a Case Study written to be used within the University of South Australia (UniSA) / Open Universities Australia OUA) Master of Project Management degree. Specifically, its content is designed to support the content of the Portfolio and Program Management course/unit.
Although the business challenges are reflective of the “real world”, all data, as well as names of organisations and individuals, and other background information, are fictitious.
The intent, however, is to allow the student to apply their knowledge of portfolio and program management as a means to identify and propose resolutions for the challenges which “InnovaLast” is facing.
Background: Lessons Learned
InnovaLast is an Australia-based sustainable consumer products company which, over 10 years, has grown from a producing a single product to having a broad and diverse offering. Its founders, Olivia Long and Jan Green, shared a passion for environmental sustainability, and a concern about throw-away products which contributed to the problem of landfill.
Olivia Long – known as “Liv” to her friends - had graduated from university with a Master’s degree in Industrial Design & Engineering, having been a dedicated student.
She became the Senior Product Engineer for a company which produced high-end domestic kitchen appliances. Although innovative, the company struggled to compete with other manufacturers which were adept at modifying their competitors’ products, and producing them off-shore to achieve a landed cost which significantly-lower those produced locally.
Consequently, the dominant retail chains switched their buying preferences to those suppliers which enabled them to achieve greater retail margins. Despite a vigorous marketing campaign, Liv’s employer fell victim to cost pressures and went into liquidation, resulting in her accepting a generous redundancy package, arising from 17 years’ service.
Liv took time off to pursue other interests, particularly travel. She spent time in locations such as South America and South-East Asia. She was struck by how different, in general, consumer products were viewed, with a much high emphasis placed upon utility, ahead of appearance. She also noted the role that they played in accumulation of landfill, as they became obsolete or broken.
Jan Green knew Liv from university, though she studied environmental science. After graduation, she worked for the local city council, before taking up a role with an overseas agency specialising in dealing with environmental contamination. While overseas, Jan completed a Master of Business Administration degree.
After 10 years, she returned to Australia and worked mostly as an independent consultant, engaged to investigate claims of environmental contamination resulting from manufacturing processes. Jan reconnected with Liv at a university alumni event, and discovered a shared interest in environmental protection.
Andrew Mann, who preferred to be called Andy, worked in consumer goods’ marketing for 16 years, attaining various industry accolades. He had studied accountancy initially, and maintained a keen mind for numbers, although his heart leaned towards the creativity offered by a career in marketing.
Having contributed to a broad range of client engagements, Andy was offered the opportunity to devise and execute a marketing campaign for a local, prestigious kitchen appliance.
