AIMS OF RESEARCH

Adding to this Mouton and Marais (1990:193) and Wagner, Kawulich and Garner (2014:28) are of the opinion that the researcher should state whether the project is exploratory, descriptive, explanatory, analytical or predictive. The purpose of this phenomenological study will be to:
•    Evaluate, describe and analyze the use of modus operandi in criminal investigations of small businesses in Grahamstown. The study will therefore assess and show how this modus operandi can be used for the identification of suspects.
•    Empower and educate investigation officers on how to use modus operandi information in the process of identifying the robbers of small business in the Grahamstown policing area. This will enable investigating officers to become better and more effective and efficient in their investigation into small business robberies.
•    Explore national and international literature sources to gather new and current information on modus operandi as a way of identifying suspects during small business robbery investigations. This study will also explore the experiences of the respondents, that is, using modus operandi information to identify the robbers of small business robbers. 
•    Enhance and develop procedures and ascertain whether adequate policies exist relating to the use of modus operandi during business robberies criminal investigations. As Denscombe (2010:11) asserts this approach serves to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current processes and possible improvements thereto.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

According to Punch (2014:58) empirical research is driven by research questions which give direction to the research project while Denscombe (2002:31) and Salkind (2012:44) mention that, research questions specify exactly what is to be investigated by the researcher. A research question is also a clearly stated expression of interest and intend. By formulating the relevant do-able research questions the researcher will be able to find appropriate literature sources which will help the researcher to focus on the study. Flick (2011:23) mentions that answering research questions should lead to some kind of progress and to solve the problem under study.
