5. Mrs Jones (62 years old) has just returned to the ward from the operating theatre following a left hemicolectomy and formation of a colostomy following a tumour of the colon. She remains NBM until review. Normal Saline (0.9%) is running intravenously 8hrly. You have taken her vital signs and they are: 

• RR 21 

• Sp02 95% on 2L via n/prongs 

• HR 110, regular 

• B/P 90/55 

• T 35.6 

 5a. Following her colostomy, identify and explain the physiology of one (1) immediate potential post-operative complication related to the respiratory system.

5b. Outline an immediate post-operative nursing intervention with rationale to reduce the risk of the above complication identified for Mrs. Jones.      

6. On day 3 post-op Mrs Jones becomes upset and starts crying after telling you she thinks her colostomy is ugly. Outline how you would best respond to Mrs Jones.
