Mr James Bailey is a 47 year old man who has recently been diagnosed as being in the early stages of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). As a chef, James often indulges in unhealthy food options, and has been finding it hard to get to the gym because of his work schedule.  Despite smoking for decades, he still considers himself a ‘social smoker’ as he only smokes cigarettes on weekends or special occasions. 

His partner Sandra understands that early treatment can slow down the progression of COPD and reduce the risk of flare-ups, but she is having trouble getting James to make any changes to his lifestyle.

Sandra organises a meeting with a health professional from a local community service organisation to try to convince James of the steps he should take to manage the COPD. In the meeting, James acts quite defensively, saying “There’s no point doing anything – it’s all over for me now. I may as well go out doing what I like!”. 

The health professional realises that they will need further conversations with James around keeping the COPD well managed for him to avoid hospitalisation.
