A community of 500, located in central Victoria and recorded to have been on the land for over 60,000 years. In the 1980’s, the traditional homelands of the HEC were subjected to zinc mining by Badman Mining Inc (BMI). The land was granted to the BMI by the State Government. The HEC claim they were not consulted. The disruption to the HECs traditional way of life has been severely impacted and continues even now in 2020. The community members have turned to Mr Wood for their support and guidance to challenge this activity on their land. The mine is no longer active. In the meantime, the plight of the HEC is gaining traction in the press. Mr Wood has become the face and voice of the community. He has featured in many interviews outlining the past injustice faced by the HEC community. One media release featured in the press, The Have No Idea Daily, written by Peter Asston, questioned Mr Woods indigeneity and claims that Mr Wood is only seeking to benefit his own future political career by falsely claiming he is indigenous.
