As a part of my clinical placement I was posted in 8^th Med Stroke Southern DHB Dunedin. During my postings in stroke unit I met Mr. X who got admitted to stroke unit due to left sided weakness which suddenly developed while he was doing gardening. He was brought to hospital by his wife and daughter. He was staying with her wife at home. I was taking care of him after few days of his admission. He was having decreased muscle strength (3/6) on left side. He was conscious and alert. He was aware of what was happening around him.

             I introduced myself to him and told “I am Varsha an internationally qualified nurse who will be taking care of you today. How are you feeling today? How was the night before? Did you sleep comfortably last night?” He replied in a single word “Yes”. But I felt something is wrong as he was not looking good. He had a tired face and his eyes were like he had not slept the last night. I felt that he was worried of something. I just assessed his vital signs and left him say; “I will be back in some time. Meanwhile if you need my help you can just ring the bell and I will be back. Even though I went back I felt something is not right. I turned to him after 10-15 min and asked him “Can I make you sit upright and provide you with a towel to wipe your face as its time to have your breakfast and its right here?”             He replied “Ok you can”. I served him food; he had his breakfast under supervision to avoid chocking. I assisted him for his ADLs. He was on full hoist and finding difficulty in walking.  I tried to develop a therapeutic relationship with him. The next day when I went to him; he started to talk to me. He told me “I don’t like to be a burden my family and friends with my condition. I don’t know whether my wife will understand me or not. Will she be able to take care of me?  When will I be normal as I was before? Actually I don’t want to make others to do my personal hygiene. But unfortunately I’m forced to accept the care. I won’t wish what I am going through should happen to my worst enemy.” For a couple of minutes I was not able to reply him back. I felt really sorry for how he was experiencing. I came to know that he is really sad and felt that he is not going through a good time. I gained all courage and spoke to him. I told him. “Don’t worry everything is going to be alright. You can see that you are getting better. The present condition is only because of the stroke that you had. Each person will experience symptom differently. I can’t tell you the exact day and date when you will be able to come back to your normal life but am pretty sure that you can. All you need is a strong will power and regular follow up with the medical support.
