You have had ulcerative colitis since you were a teenager. This condition has become worse over the last year and leading up to surgery. You have lost over 20kg in weight and had diarrhoea up to 20 times a day (watery, blood-stained motions). You feel weak, tired and miserable most of the time. Also, you had a good job in information and technology until a year ago but have been unable to work since then due to your condition. You have been quite depressed and approached your surgery with mixed feelings.

Your doctor told you that your health would improve following surgery and that you would be able to lead a normal life again. You are anxious and scared about having an ileostomy and worried about whether your partner will still find you attractive.

You are lying on your side with your legs drawn towards your abdomen.

You grimace when you move. Also, you are reluctant to use the PCA (pain controlled analgesia) as one of the nurses told you that if you used it too much it could be addictive and could even stop your breathing. The nurse also informed you that the morphine was causing your nausea. You communicate this to the morning staff only if they ask you why you are not using the PCA often.

You have not been given any other medications for pain. Your pain level is now 8 out of 10. You describe your pain (only if asked) as sharp and stabbing. Your abdomen, pelvis and back are painful and you are reluctant to move as it hurts too much.

Your son/daughter is with you and is very concerned about you.
