Task 1 

Client brief: You are called to do a consultation on a site located within a twenty kilometre radius of where you currently reside. Your client Mrs Cole is female, in her forties and married with three teenage boys. 

The eldest son is at college and likes to come home during his holidays to practise golf putting with his father. 

The two other children like to play football in their spare time, but their local playing field is miles away.. 

The lady of the house is well groomed and fashionably dressed in a cream shirt, well cut denim jeans and expensive shoes, carrying a recognisable designer handbag. As she tells you she is an amateur flower arranger you get the sense that she would like a lot of colour and plant-life in her garden. However due to being busy she may not be able to stick to a strict weekly maintenance schedule. 

She wants you to plan her new garden. She entertains outdoors quite frequently and would like to be able to cook outdoors rain or shine. She informs you would like to grow her own vegetables, but she suffers from a back problem that prevents her stooping much. 

Apart from the few existing elements listed on the drawing the garden is a fairly blank canvas at present. It is surrounded by 1-metre high unplastered block walls on all sides, save for a 1-metre high wooden fence (picket) on the northerly side. There is a strong prevailing wind from the east. As the garden is a new build, the cables for garden lighting have yet to be laid. This gives you a free hand at lighting placement. 

Draw a concept plan based on the base plan as provided. Include all relevant labelling. 

Task 2 

Write a description of the garden you have just designed. Describe all the elements and a rough idea of the plant forms you would have suggested to your client, given her details as you have noted them. Give reasons for your choices. Include photographic images of your elements. Glue these to a sheet of paper and label accordingly. 

Task 3 

What do you know about Balance and Proportion as it relates to garden design? What steps should be taken to ensure this garden design principle is followed when you design?
