Mrs Rossi (Florence) is a 64 year old woman of Italian heritage who immigrated to Australia with her husband and two young children in the 1980s. Florence has been referred for counselling by her GP who notes there have been some significant changes in her recent mood. Florence reports that for the last few months she has been feeling ‘not like herself’. She also reports she has no motivation to partake in previously enjoyed activities such as knitting and her weekly walking group. Florence notes that she does not feel very connected to her husband, and is worried he is growing less attracted to her as she ages.

Florence does not really know why she started feeling so down, though feels it may be due to a particularly stressful incident at her volunteer position a few months ago combined with a close friend being diagnosed with a terminal illness. She has reported feeling the ‘blues’ before, but is often able to pull herself out of her low mood. This time seems different though as she has never withdrawn from her social activities before and stopped seeing her friends. She feels that she has been able to overcome these feelings before because of the support of her husband, but since she has not been feeling close to him it’s been hard to stop feeling so low. She has also reported trouble sleeping and weight loss, which she attributes to her loss of appetite.
