Highlights
1. Product-based: a project involving the development of a product. You need to ensure you have included a discussion of the development approach in Section 3, and an indication of what the end product could entail.
2. Empirical-based: a project involving the collection of primary data (via methods such as interviews, experiments, simulations, etc). You need to ensure you have included a discussion of methods in Section 3.
You should produce your proposal as a paper with a word count of words. There is a Research Proposal Template available on the VLE (under the Proposal Guidelines and Examples folder) should you wish to use it.
Introduction
You should provide a clear explanation of the project. It is critical that, in this section, you include the research aim and objectives, as well as research questions and/or hypotheses in a clear and well-argued fashion. A set of numbered bullet points, one for each objective, is advisable. You must seek to offer a convincing set of objectives to form the basis for a research project appropriate for the Masters level. You should aim to offer a persuasive reason (rationale) for why the selected topic is important and relevant.
Literature Review
You should provide a research background to situate the study within the academic literature. You should ensure that the literature is presented in a balanced, clear and critical manner. You may find it helpful to include some critical evaluation of the existing literature in the form of a table, e.g. methods utilized vs. criteria chosen for evaluation.
Methodology
Here you should explain which development/research methodology and research methods will be used in the project. You should justify why these are appropriate, why others were rejected, and clearly indicate the strengths and limitations of the chosen methodology and research methods selected. You should aim to provide as much information about the process as possible, with an indication of, for example, the population targeted, the sampling strategy selected, the size of data collection, and how the data collection/product design and build would be carried out.
Architectural Design
This applies to product-based projects only. As a minimum, include a graphical representation of the product idea showing its high-level components and explaining their interactions. Make sure you explain each diagram in the text.
Ethical Considerations
You should discuss any ethical issues that the project might raise. If you believe that it raises no ethical issues you should state this and justify it.
Project Plan
You should provide a page plan, for example, in the format of a Gantt Chart, of how the project could be managed if it were to be completed in the time frame suggested in the project outline.
