Guidelines

You are working as a Health Promotion Officer. You have been asked by your Manager to prepare and present a multi-level health promotion plan, justification and partnership map to your organisations Community Advisory Committee on the social/health issue, priority population and geographical area.

 

In preparing your presentation you must include the following:

  • The issue
    • Clearly identify the health/social issue, the priority population and the geographical area.
  • A clear statement of the most pressing needs to be addressed that are amenable to health promotion action (identified in Assessment 1).

 

  • The program plan
  • One goal, three (or more) objectives and three (or more) strategies are to be presented.
  • The goal, objectives and strategies should be clearly and logically aligned with the determinants of chosen health/social issue, the previously identified needs, a theory of change, the evidence and draw on the identified assets. To achieve this, students should choose and apply one health promotion planning model.
  • The goals and objectives should meet the SMART criteria.
  • Strategies chosen should adopt a portfolio approach; that is, each strategy should address a different level of change from a variety of health promotion action areas. For example, the Ottawa Charter includes five action areas; a portfolio approach to strategy selection entails adopting a strategy from each of the action areas, rather than selectively focusing on one action area alone.

 

Justification for choice of strategies

  • Drawing on evidence, justify and highlight why the strategies chosen are suitable to achieve the changes articulated in the program objectives and meet the identified needs. Explain one or more theory/theories of change (see Resource 2 below) that has been used to inform the choice/s of strategies.
  • Propose how the assets identified in Assessment 1 can be drawn upon during the implementation of the strategies. Key assets, including a map of partners and stakeholders, must be included.
  • Practice issues: explain practical steps that can be taken in the implementation of the proposed strategies to increase program sustainability, community capacity or empowerment (choose one).

Credible sources include peer-reviewed journal articles; systematic reviews; government or government agency reports and population data sources (e.g. national health surveys, census data, data registries); international body reports and population data sources (e.g. WHO, UN, World Bank); and peak body / organisation reports (grey literature).
