A Transport Master Plan for Nakuru City has recommended for the upgrading of the Nakuru- Sigor Road to improve regional connectivity. The volume count made on a section of the arterial road shows annual average daily traffic (ADT) of 5000 vpd in 2021. It is proposed to improve this road to cater for a 20-year medium-term planning horizon up to 2041. Additional studies established that normal traffic growth may be taken as 50 per cent of the current traffic and diverted traffic may be taken as 30 per cent.

• Calculate the ADT in 2033 if an increase of 1000 vehicles per day is expected due to development.
• Given that the 30th highest hourly traffic volume is 20 per cent of ADT, and one-way volume in the predominant direction is 60 per cent of two-way volume, determine the number of lanes required if the practical capacity of 600 veh/hour/lane.
