Assessment Overview

The presentation will critically reflect graduate level knowledge and contemporary nursing practice and link this to future employment and understanding of the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016).

The purpose of this assessment task is to:

• Assist students in consolidating knowledge gained on the various focus topics relating to provision of quality patient care.

• Apply knowledge obtained through participation in workshops, clinical labs, simulations and your self-directed learning through your pre & post activities in problem solving and decision making in authentic clinical scenarios.

The unit learning outcome(s) assessed are:

• LO 3: Exemplify a broad range of therapeutic and intraprofessional and interprofessional communication skills to engage in person-centred collaborative practice;

• LO 4: Elucidate intellectual independence through the application of critical thought and judgement in professional and therapeutic nursing practice;

• LO 5: Appraise ethical dilemmas and issues arising in professional practice, exemplifying professional values and ethics;

Assessment Details

Students will present on a key ethical dilemma they have experienced in practice and use appropriate resolutions using the NMBA standards.

This individual presentation assessment task is based on a patient clinical scenario. Students need to draw upon knowledge gained through workshops, clinical labs, simulations and your own self-directed learning through your pre/post learning resources during the initial three (3) weeks of the unit as well clinical experience.

You need to use a different dilemma from Assessment 3 and this must be a patient clinical scenario.

Link to the Nursing Standards, Code of Conduct, Patient Safety Framework, ICN Code of Ethics (these resources are available in the Assessment 5 instructions).

Students are to develop a recorded 20 minute Powerpoint/Prezi presentation and upload this to the relevant dropbox. Content that is delivered after the 20 minute mark will not be viewed. If you presentation is significantly undertime (<10>

Students may choose to include animations or short videos/clips within their presentation. These videos MUST NOT exceed a total of 2 minutes combined (10% of 20 minutes).

You may choose to cover the following points in your PPP however remember that you should do your best to elaborate on each slide. You do not have to follow this format; you may chose to discuss your dilemma in a different way. These questions are a guide only. Do not to write everything in the PPP, discuss in more depth to make the presentation more interesting:

• Introduce your scenario

• Identify the ethical dilemma you were faced with and explain why this is an ethical dilemma

• What challenged you throughout this dilemma

• What was the resolution or outcome of this dilemma? Was this the best outcome? If not, what would have been a better outcome?

• Could there have been someone assist you, or did you have someone assist in resolving this dilemma?

• Were there any guidelines or policies/procedures that may have helped or that you utilised?

Assessment Criteria

The following levels of criteria will be used to grade this assessment task: Includes some essential information with critical details missing.

Assessment requirements 

• Purpose: Produce a recorded, narrated individual presentation (20 minutes) that critically reflects graduate-level knowledge and contemporary nursing practice, linking learning to future employment and the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016).

• Task focus: Present a patient clinical scenario describing a key ethical dilemma you experienced in practice (different from Assessment 3). Use NMBA standards, Code of Conduct, Patient Safety Framework and ICN Code of Ethics to analyse and resolve the dilemma.

• Evidence & scope: Draw on workshops, clinical labs, simulations and self-directed learning from the first three weeks plus clinical experience. Use contemporary references to support arguments.

• Format & submission: 20-minute PowerPoint or Prezi with narration uploaded to the dropbox. Content after 20:00 will not be viewed. Presentations significantly under time (<10>

• Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality at all times — do not disclose venue or identifying details.

• Assessment criteria: Follow the rubric (refer to unit site) and ensure compliance with submission instructions.

Key pointers students must cover

• Clear scenario introduction: brief context, patient situation, and your role.

• Define the ethical dilemma: why it is ethical (conflicting values, duties, or rights).

• Critical analysis: apply NMBA standards, Code of Conduct, Patient Safety Framework and ICN Code of Ethics — explicitly map guidelines to the dilemma.

• Challenges faced: practical, interpersonal, systemic or legal obstacles.

• Resolution & reflection: what happened, whether it was the best outcome, and alternatives that might have been better.

• Support & escalation: who assisted (or should have), and what resources/policies were relevant.

• Evidence & referencing: contemporary, primary sources to justify decisions and ethical reasoning.

• Presentation quality: concise slides (avoid full text), clear narration, timing control, adherence to video limits, and full reference slide(s).

• Confidentiality & professionalism: remove identifying details and demonstrate ethical handling of the case.
