Overview:
Begin by answering the following to create an overview or mind-map in your head. Which essay question interests you the most? What do you think the question is asking you to do (this will be your central theme)? What do you already know about the topic? What do you need to know in more detail to answer the question? What are some keywords you could use in your research (the library has many resources and webinars on finding resources which will be very useful here)? Use the template below to structure each paragraph within your essay, keeping in mind your central theme the whole time. Maintain a professional academic tone by writing in the third person (especially avoid first person through personal pronouns e.g. I believe…) and avoiding referring to the essay itself (in this essay…).

I have acknowledged all sources used according to the approved referencing style. Introduction
Introduce the topic and explain how the question will be answered. This is done through an essay statement that directly addresses the essay topic. Your essay statement is the main thread/central theme within your essay. It summarises the aim of your essay, tells the reader what to expect in terms of an answer to the essay question, and clarifies why the topic is important. An introduction should engage the reader, enticing them to read on. Avoid referring to the essay itself (e.g. in this essay…) and writing in first person (I believe…). Avoid listing what will be covered,
Paragraph
Each paragraph needs to follow a clear structure. Try using T.E.E.L. to help you structure each paragraph. Topic Sentence – this is a statement about what point your paragraph will make.
Example – this is evidence to back up your point.
Explanation – this is where you demonstrate that you understand your example and explain how it supports your point.
Link – this is where you sum-up your point, and then introduce your next idea.
A topic sentence is the main idea/argument for a paragraph. It is usually (but not always) the first sentence and tells the reader what to expect to read about in that paragraph. The idea expressed by the topic sentence should relate directly and obviously to the essay statement. Your topic sentence ensures your idea is clear to the reader and assists in avoiding repeating topics.
The remainder of the paragraph needs to elaborate on the topic by providing more detailed description and explanation, and/or by providing examples. This detail is the evidence that backs up the idea or argument expressed by your topic sentence. Your job is to inform the reader of the ‘what, when, how, and why’ of the topic. You will likely also need to explain how this topic links or is related to the main essay question. Your paragraph should not contain additional information unrelated to your topic sentence. Consider creating a new paragraph with a new topic sentence. Conclude with a linking sentence to the next paragraph. If you are providing definitions and examples that are not your own (even if it is paraphrased) you must reference the resources used or it is plagiarism.
Paragraph one
Define Vitalism and Vis Medicatrix Naturae. Describe how Vitalism is linked to the Vis Medicatrix Naturae. OR
Define Holism and Tolle totum. Describe how Holism is linked to the Tolle totum. (suggested word count 200 words)
Vitalism and Holism are ontological views. An ontological view is a view of reality, it is how someone makes sense of the world around them. Your definition must include the ontological view (rather than simply its application to health) and must be referenced (with any definition you must reference your source/s). Relate this ontological view to naturopathic philosophy and practice. Do this by explaining how a naturopath views health and disease holistically through the clinical principle of Vis Medicatrix Naturae or Tolle Totum? Give examples (e.g. how a naturopath might approach a disease state) to round out your definition and apply it to naturopathic healthcare practice. Ensure your definition for VMN does not include holistic principles and vice versa; they are similar ideas but
Paragraph two
Define Mechanism
OR
Define Reductionism (suggested word count 100 words)
Remember that Mechanism is opposed to Vitalism, and Reductionism is opposed to Holism as ontological views. With any definition you need to reference your source of information. Give an example (e.g. how might a medical practitioner approach a disease state) to round out your definition and apply it to healthcare practice.
Paragraph three
Compare and contrast between Vitalism/VMN and Mechanism
OR
Compare and contrast between Holism/Tolle totum and Reductionism. How are they different? How are they similar? (suggested word count 250 words)
Consider your definitions for each ontological view. Detail how they are different.
Consider your examples of how this is applied in healthcare. How does these opposite views of reality practitioners have influence how they approach health and disease? How is vitalistic or holistic practice different to mechanistic or reductionist views of how to treat disease?
Conclusion
Summarise the essay topic and explain how the question has been answered. Do not introduce new information into the conclusion. Reiterate the essay statement from your introduction. Directly address the essay topic. Summarise the aim of your essay, tells the reader how you answered the essay question, and clarify why the topic is important. A conclusion should convince the reader, enticing them to agree with you. Avoid referring to the essay itself (e.g. in this essay…) and writing in first person (I believe…). Avoid listing what was covered, instead discuss why it was covered and how it clarified your topic. It is often easiest to write your conclusion once the essay and introduction have been completed.
