Assessment Details

Overview:

This assessment requires you to reflect and comment on your learning experience during three specified sessions. The focus of your journal entries is not on what you have learnt during the session but the process of learning you went through. Reflecting on your learning process gives you the skills necessary to go beyond technical knowledge to understand more abstract constructs such as critical thinking, professional values, attitudes, and beliefs through bringing emphasis to the importance of problem solving and professional practice.

This reflection involves questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values whilst recognising they underlie your thought processes as you solve problems, anticipate outcomes, and justify your actions. Critical reflection also aims to clarify what you have studied, how you integrated new knowledge with previous knowledge, to identify questions you have, and identify what you have yet to learn.

Journal entries - sessions 4, 5 and 6

You will reflect on what you have learnt in sessions 4, 5 and 6. Write a reflective journal entry for each session (suggested word count 250 each).

Reflect on the following points to help create a framework to each journal entry.

  1. Describe objectively what happened during your learning process. Give the details of what happened. Answer the question: What did I do, read, see, hear, interact with, discuss, write etc. to learn the material presented during the session? Note – do not focus on what you learnt (e.g. the topics of the session) but focus on HOW you learnt.
  1. Interpret the events. Explain your learning: what were the new insights? Did you make connections with other learning (perhaps from another class, or from other sources, previous degrees etc.)? What were your feelings toward the material, especially those that challenged your previous understandings? What were your hypotheses and conclusions? Answer the questions: What was the reason I did this activity? What might it mean?
  1. Make judgments connected to observations you have made. Answer the questions: How is this useful? How did you process the new information, particularly that which challenge and perhaps changed your initial views on the topic significantly? What did you practically do when presented with new and/or challenging information? Did you connect with peers, friends, family, teachers? Did you read other types of information e.g. research, websites, books etc. Avoid making simplistic judgments e.g. this was good, correct, valuable info and instead describe the process that you went through to evaluate this information you received in the session.
  2. Plan how this learning will be applied. Comment on its relevance to your course, program, future profession, life. Answer the question: How might this learning apply in my future? Avoid simplistic judgments (e.g. all this information is useful and I plan on using it in clinic) and instead describe why you arrived at the decision to apply it in future, review it in more depth and reconsider it at a later stage, or reject it.

  • Assessment of your reflective journal entries will focus not on content (e.g. what you have learnt) but on your proficiency in the process of reflection i.e. a superficial overview of learning (simple acceptance of the material taught without critical reflection) or a more descriptive level with deeper, more analytical reflection (critical analysis of material, thought processes and underlying assumptions)
