Highlights
1. Download the file, payroll.txt from the Google Drive (See link in Weeks Two & Three Materials to Read and Review folder) to your Linux Projects folder on your Windows drive. The file layout is included on the last page of this lab.
2. On your Windows system, right click on payroll.txt that you downloaded and click on Copy.
3. Using the GUI on your VM and the file cabinet icon, paste the file to your home directory (/home/user1). If you use another user name, copy it to that user’s home directory.
4. Make a backup copy of payroll.txt by right-clicking on it in your VM’s file cabinet and copying it.
5. Once you have the file downloaded and are ready to begin the lab, start a screen capture (screen, Ctrl-a, Shift-h).
6. Type echo
7. Type date
Using vi: Now you are going to experiment with vi
1. vi payroll.txt
2. Type G to go to the end of the file
3. Type o to open a line
4. Enter the information listed below for Donald Trump: name, address (incl city-state), zip, phone # (incl area code and dashes) and a hire date (Three character month name, day and 4-digit year - For example, Feb 7 2019. Be sure to include commas between fields and if there is a field missing (such as Address Line 2), include another comma as a placeholder).
5. Your entry should look like this: Donald Trump,1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW,, Washington DC,20500,202-456- 1111, DTrum whitehouse.org,Feb 7 2019
6. ESC to get out of insert mode
7. 1G to get to the beginning of the file.
