Sunshine Fitness and Rehabilitation (SFR) was established by Sarah White while studying for her Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology. Sarah had previously trained as a fitness instructor and offered personal training sessions from her garage gym to pay for her studies. Sarah’s small business still operates from her garage but has also expanded to a small commercial gym behind the Forest Glen shopping centre. Although SFR’s Forest Glen premises is a small gym, it is equipped with modern
cardio training equipment, free weights, and functional training zones and offers small group fitness classes, group strength training and personal training sessions. The gym employs five fitness instructors, two administration staff and a manager. Sarah admits to having limited technology skills and this is reflected in the patchwork of systems that were initially created for the garage gym requirements and then expanded for the growing business requirements. Information systems for SFR largely rely on Excel spreadsheets and a website. For example, membership details for each member and gym staff details are currently stored in Excel spreadsheets. Google docs and Google Drive are used to record specialised client requirements, training programs and other forms used to monitor client progress. Timetables for group fitness classes, group strength training classes and personal training sessions are also maintained within Excel spreadsheets. SFR’s website provides a basic description of the facilities, equipment and services available as well as a timetable for the group fitness classes and group strength training. Opening hours, contact details and details of the types of membership available are also displayed. Membership payments and receipts are processed through SFR’s point-of-sale terminal. SFR members and staff access the gym by swiping their membership/staff cards linked to the gym’s swipe access system – this is the only form of security at SFR. Sarah is primarily involved in the business management but also offers some personal training sessions from her garage gym. With knowledge gained from her Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology, Sarah is planning further expansion of SFR’s services to include personalised neuromuscular exercise therapy, post-surgical rehabilitation and aged care strength programs. These services would be offered at the Forest Glen premises and at a new premise in Cotton Tree located on the sixth floor of a commercial building on the esplanade. Mobile services would also be offered for clients as required. Customised training programs would be created for these specialised services and also for clients undertaking personal training sessions. Sarah expects these customised training programs should be made available to clients online. A new lease has already been arranged for SFR - Cotton Tree and Sarah is arranging additional staff hire. However, Sarah is concerned about duplicating the current SFR information systems at the Cotton Tree location. This is further complicated as access to client details and programs also needs to be available via tablets for exercise physiologists providing home visits. The Internet connectivity at Forest Glen is adequate for their current use – there are only a few desktop computers and staff are encouraged to bring their own laptop, tablet and/or smart phone for easier access to information via the wireless network.
