I will be reflecting on my incompetence on an incident of catheterization using the Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988). The incident happened when I was attempting to insert an indwelling urinary catheter to an elderly female patient in a primary healthcare facility in 2012. I was asked to do it, which I agreed without hesitation. The patient was in pain due to urine retention. I then called the attention of the senior nurse.

Feeling

At starting, I was feeling confident about the procedure, which turned into the frustration of not being successful. Immediately after the event, I had a feeling of guilt despite the patient was stabilized.

Evaluation

Although, I followed the hospital protocol of putting all the required items ready before starting, and I ensured an aseptic technique as a general recommendation (Tan, Ahluwalia, Kankam, & Menezes, 2019). My frustration was because I could not do it as a graduate nurse, while my feeling of guilt was despite having difficulties in locating the urethra, I did not give up until the patent was in intense pain. 

Analysis

I should not have agreed to perform any procedure without competence (Lengetti et al., 2018). Similarly, at the time when the patient began to show pain signs, I should have stopped immediately and seek for assistance. My action could put the patient in more pain and complication risk.
