Normal Lung Development - Health Assignment Help

Assignment Task:

Breathing movements in fetal life are essential to normal lung development. They condition the respiratory muscles, and stimulate lung development by creating a pressure gradient between the lungs and the amniotic fluid. At birth the lungs are half filled with fluid derived from the amniotic cavity, lungs and tracheal glands. This fluid is replaced by air by pressure on the thorax during delivery, and is additionally absorbed into the pulmonary capillaries, veins, arteries and lymphatics. It is important that there are adequate amounts of amniotic fluid to allow for fetal breathing, or the lungs are underdeveloped (i.e. hypoplastic). In addition, there must be enough thoracic space in which the lungs can grow, so any disorder that reduces the amount of available space will compress the developing lung (i.e. diaphragmatic hernia).
