Aim of assessment
The purpose of the evidenced base case study is to enable students to demonstrate their developing knowledge of Mental Health Practice by analysing and responding to a series of questions related to a clinical scenario. The assignment will also assist in preparing students for mental health clinical placements and future mental health practice.

You are a Registered Nurse in an acute mental health ward. You admit Mary who was transferred from a medical ward where she has been treated for a fractured humerus and multiple lacerations after a car accident. Mary had been driving and there were no passengers in the car at the time.
Mary is a 55-year-old Caucasian female. She was divorced last year after 30 years of marriage and now lives alone. Her two daughters are married and live locally. She has a mortgage(jewellary) on her home. Mary states that she has been unable to concentrate at work. She fears that she is at risk of losing her job as an accounts clerk.
Mary presents as teary, and states that she feels miserable (sad) – “My daughters are better off without me.” Mary’s maternal aunt and grandmother committed suicide. Mary states that she has lost her appetite and she has gone down a dress size. She describes difficulty in getting out of bed in the morning, and struggles to get to work on time. She has disturbed sleep and constantly feels fatigued. So much so that she no longer knits which she used to find enjoyable.

Depression and suicide are significant areas of concern in Australia.
1. a) Investigate and outline the incidence of depression in Australia. Include statistics in your answer.
b) Critically discuss one demographic group identified as ‘at risk’ of depression.

PART 2.
3. Critically discuss three (3) factors that may have contributed to the development of the client’s mental health concerns and risks. Support your points with evidence.
4. Address each criterion for involuntary treatment under the Mental Health Act 2014 W.A. to form an argument whether or not Mary should be detained for treatment as an involuntary patient. Include in your answer how your decision will impact on the client.
