2. PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES
2.1 Purpose
This is a module that introduces second year students into the key perspectives of media representations of reality and provides them with a concise and significant insight of the media representation concept and its position and role in society. The module is packaged on a global scale with a view to positioning the students on a pedestal that would make them at par with any entrant into the field of Media Studies anywhere in the world. However, some examples used are typically South African in positioning and context. The module is designed to balance the representation of gender, stereotypes, identity, sexual orientations, HIV/AIDS, race, television violence, environment, terrorism, and news. The module content is packaged with the understanding that most of the students are not yet professionals in the field of media studies but rather beginners who are mostly second year undergraduates and are entirely new in the discipline. This study guide gives students the required and necessary information which includes the module structure, aims and objectives of the module.
