Introduction

The title “Responding to families with complex needs: a national survey of child and family health nurses” (Rossiter et al., 2017, p. 386) is well structured, informative and provides the reader with a general overlook what this particular journal article is about. However, it is also misleading as it doesn’t state where this research has taken place and could have been simply fixed by the authors simply changing the heading to state which country the national survey had taken place. The article has been peer-reviewed, meaning its level of creditability has been increased, also articles published in the Journal of Advanced nursing are increasingly cited and used by health professionals as papers are required to have a sound evidential based and critical in approach (Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2020, para. 9-11).

The authors of the selected article, Rossiter et al. (2017) are either internationally and/or nationally recognised for their research in child and family health. Abstract

The abstract section of a research article provides the reader with a brief insight into the article as a quick way of getting to know it (Al-Jundi and Sakka, 2017, p.1). This section should clearly outline the problem or purpose of the research as well as cite the methods used, results, conclusions and recommendations for practice (Ingham-Broomfield, 2014, p. 39). Rossiter et al. (2017) aim to “explore the extent to which Australian child and family health nurses work with families with complex needs and how their practice responds to those needs” (p.386). The design, results and conclusion are all concisely described which effectively outlines the purpose of the study and gives the reader enough information to determine whether to continue reading. The only gaps found is the outline of the design, unless the reader has prior knowledge of descriptive studies and cross-sectional data, it can be misleading.
