Assessment item 2 - Smart Goal

Part One

In this part of the assessment students are required to outline an appropriate SMART goal for your NRS398 Workplace Learning 6 Experience.

Students are required to present the SMART Goal using the Assessment 2 SMART Template provided.

Part Two

Underneath your SMART Goal, address the following five (5) points to demonstrate your ability
to integrate and synthesise the domains of:

  • scope of practice;
  • caring-in-practice;
  • use of evidence;
  • safety in practice;
  • clinical reasoning; and
  • mindful communication to support caring

1. Describe how your SMART goal is relevant to your Scope of Practice as a student
nurse by referring to the WPL Handbook.
2. Describe how your SMART goal meets at least ONE of the National Safety and Quality
Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
3. Describe the current evidence or best practice guidelines, which will support you in
achieving your SMART goal.
4. Describe one of the 6 C’s and how this links to your chosen SMART goal. The 6 C’s are
below;

Care:  The key component of nursing across the world. The care we provide helps the individual
person and improves the health of the whole community.

Compassion: How Nurses provide the care to patients through relationships based on empathy,
respect and dignity.

Competence: Demonstrated by the nurse when they continually improve their clinical and
technical knowledge to deliver effective care and treatments based on research and evidence.

Communication: High standards of communication are essential to successful caring relationships and to ensure an effective working team. This incorporates listening as it is just as important as what we say and do.

5. Describe how you will evaluate and reflect on your chosen SMART goal.

You do not need to include an introduction or conclusion for this task. Please submit as one document. All sources must be correctly referenced in-text and in the reference list in accordance with APA 7th Edition referencing style. It is strongly recommended that you use headings to organise your paper, and the Assessment Template provided. Please note that an introduction and conclusion are not required for this assessment.

Brief Summary of Assessment Requirements

The purpose of this assessment is for students to develop a SMART goal related to their NRS398 Workplace Learning 6 (WPL) experience and to demonstrate their ability to integrate nursing practice domains. The assessment is divided into two parts:

Part One:

  • Create an appropriate SMART goal using the Assessment 2 SMART Template.
  • Ensure the goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Part Two:
Under the SMART goal, students must address five key points, showing the integration of professional nursing domains:

  1. Scope of Practice – Relevance of the SMART goal to the student’s role, as outlined in the WPL Handbook.
  2. National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards – Link the goal to at least one NSQHS Standard.
  3. Evidence-Based Practice – Support the goal with current evidence or best practice guidelines.
  4. 6 C’s of Nursing – Select one of the 6 C’s (Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, Commitment) and explain its connection to the goal.
  5. Evaluation and Reflection – Describe methods for evaluating and reflecting on progress toward the SMART goal.

Submission Requirements:

  • Use headings to organise the document according to the Assessment Template.
  • Adhere to APA 7th Edition referencing.
  • No introduction or conclusion is required.

Step-by-Step Approach by the Academic Mentor

The Academic mentor guided the student through the assessment using a structured approach:

  1. Understanding the SMART Framework:

    • The mentor explained each component of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
    • Example goals were reviewed to illustrate practical application in a WPL setting.

  2. Drafting the SMART Goal:

    • The student identified a specific clinical area to improve, aligned with their WPL placement.
    • The mentor ensured the goal was measurable and realistic within the WPL timeframe.

  3. Linking to Scope of Practice:

    • The mentor guided the student to refer to the WPL Handbook to identify how their goal fit within nursing scope and responsibilities.

    • Examples of safe practice and delegated tasks were highlighted.

  4. Connecting to NSQHS Standards:

    • The mentor helped the student select a relevant NSQHS Standard, such as “Clinical Governance” or “Partnering with Consumers.”
    • The student linked actions in their goal to the selected standard.

  5. Incorporating Evidence-Based Practice:

    • Guidance was provided on identifying credible evidence, such as journal articles or clinical guidelines.
    • The student learned to justify their goal based on best practices for patient care.

  6. Integrating the 6 C’s:

    • The mentor discussed each of the 6 C’s and their relevance to nursing.
    • The student chose Competence to highlight ongoing learning and skill development tied to their SMART goal.

  7. Evaluation and Reflection Planning:

    • The mentor instructed the student to include measurable outcomes and reflection strategies, such as reflective journaling and feedback from clinical supervisors.
