Highlights
Overview
The following is a link to a number of different scenarios around mental health issues faced by people. Each scenario reinforces the idea that various mental health problems have a range of causes and solutions.
These scenarios range from early stage illness to instances where the mental health issues are much more severe. The early stage scenarios will often benefit from an early intervention approach, which will help stop a major mental health issue from arising. Some are more complex, deep-rooted issues that require more intensive help.
These scenarios have been provided only as a guide for the exercise.
This assessment exercise has been developed to help you comprehensively explore the treatment options for a person experiencing mental health issues in Australia.
Learning outcomes
This assessment task is aligned with the following learning outcomes:
• Deconstruct stepped care, its barriers and opportunities and impact on consumers and their families.
• Analyse the range of interventions within primary health settings and the impact of these interventions for at least one vulnerable group within the community.
• Critically discuss the role of ‘lived experience’ of mental illness and distress in informing policy and practice of mental health care including mutual self- help, peer support and advocacy.
Assessment details
For this final assessment exercise we would like you to do the following:

• Write a bio-psycho-social formulation of the person’s problem
• With reference to the literature describe the ideal evidenced-based treatment for this problem or constellation of problems
• Write a collaborative mental health plan which describes
a. Measurable and attainable treatment goals (with time frames)
b. Recommended treatment (specify what treatment and by whom)
c. Self-help / self-care activities
d. Community resources the person may access to assist them. A safety plan with recommended contacts if needing out of hours support
