LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
LO1 explain the difference between critical thinking, clinical reasoning and clinical judgement;
LO2 demonstrate developing skills in assessment of physical, psychosocial, and cognitive health across the lifespan;
LO3 conduct nursing health assessment interviews at a beginning level;
LO4 reflect on their learning within a professional portfolio to evaluate effective learning and self-care strategies for themselves and others;
LO5 perform peer evaluation using effective communication skills.
LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGY AND RATIONALE
Modes of delivery in this unit include lectures, laboratories, clinical placement, online activities and self- directed study. Consistent with adult learning principles, the teaching and learning strategies used within these modes of delivery will provide students with foundational knowledge and skills relevant to professional nursing practice. These strategies will also support students in meeting the aim, learning outcomes and graduate attributes of the unit and the broader course learning outcomes. Learning and teaching strategies will reflect respect for the individual as an independent learner. Students will be expected to take responsibility for their learning and to participate actively with peers.
Students entering university need significant support to transition into a learning and teaching environment where they are required to drive their own learning. To guide students in their learning, feedback is required to identify what is being done well, what requires additional work and to identify progress toward required learning outcomes. Clinical simulation assists students to link theory with its application. Located in the first year of the programme, this clinical unit includes significant face-to-face teaching hours to assist students in linking theory with practice. Lectures are utilised to convey content and central principles while laboratories and simulations deliver interactive learning sessions.
ASSESSMENT STRATEGY AND RATIONALE
In order to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit, it is expected that students will access lecture content and attend all scheduled laboratory simulations and classroom practicals.
Attendance at practical and tutorial classes is important to develop skills you will use in your clinical placements and as a graduate. Students who do not attend are at risk of not developing these skills and an attendance record will be maintained for practical and tutorial classes. Therefore, it is a requirement you attend a minimum of 80% of your scheduled practical and tutorial sessions.
1. You must contact your Lecturer-in-Charge (LIC) when you know you have breached the 80% minimum requirement for tutorials.
2. You must also provide written evidence of why you were unable to attend (sick certificate, a letter from a health professional on letterhead or a Statutory Declaration) to the LIC.
3. Your LIC will then direct you to alternate learning activities which you will need to undertake to meet the learning objectives of the unit.
Students are encouraged to speak with Disability Services should their ability to attend be impacted by an ongoing medical condition. Whilst every effort will be made to assist students who miss classes for reasons outside their control it may not be possible to make up missed content. Failure to attend classes may mean learning outcomes for the unit will not be achieved which will result in a fail grade for the unit.
