Highlights
Student participation requirements
The JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy (4.3) indicates that, “a 3 credit point subject will require a 130 hour work load of study-related participation including class attendance over the duration of the study period, irrespective of mode of delivery”. This work load comprises timetabled hours and other attendance requirements, as well as personal study hours, including completion of online learning activities and assessment requirements. Note that “attendance at specified classes will be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects” (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy, 5.10); and that additional hours may be required per week for those students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support.

Blended learning is the teaching strategy used in this subject. The blended learning approach comprises text and web-based information, together with access to video-podcasts and other materials loaded onto LearnJCU. This is to assist students to learn in a creative and flexible manner. Internal students will engage in face to face tutorials which are designed to be active learning sessions where subject content is discussed and explored. Limited attendance students will have access to online Blackboard Collaborate sessions.
Blackboard Collaborate Sessions: Blackboard Collaborate is a real-time online virtual classroom and web conferencing environment that allows teachers and students to meet, share ideas and collaborate in a private online space.
External students Collaborate: During the study period each week there will be two Collaborate Sessions for students studying in the external mode. While attendance in the Collaborate sessions is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. These sessions will provide you with the opportunity to have synchronous (at the same time) conversations with your Subject Coordinator and with your fellow students from across the subject, to have your questions answered and to receive further clarification about any concerns or questions you may have.
Internal students Collaborate: Each week there will be one Collaborate Session specifically for internal students.
These will allow internal students the opportunity to catch up with the subject coordinator and ask questions.
Attendance at the sessions is not compulsory for internal mode students.

The use of video presentations in the form of television documentaries and other video productions will be used in this subject.
