Assignment Task

Description

For this assessment you will submit three reflective tasks in response to the detailed instructions provided below.

This assessment is designed to help you develop self-awareness by reflecting on and analysing your reaction to events, readings and class activities and considering what you have learned from them.

In undertaking a Bachelor of Nursing, you are preparing to enter the nursing profession. You bring your unique identity, knowledge, and experiences with you into the profession. During your studies you will develop further as a person. As a nursing student, legally you must adhere to the profession’s values, ethics, standards of practice and codes of conduct, including cultural safety. This study requires you to develop the skills of critical reflection and maintain these as an ongoing practice. Critical reflection helps you to develop self-awareness of your personal and professional cultures, of the health care system’s culture, and of the social determinants of health. This is important because all these things impact both your practice as a health professional and health care outcomes for the people in your care.

The reflective tasks will help you to think about and examine your culture (your worldview: identity, thoughts, beliefs, values, attitudes, and assumptions) and your lifeworld: (status, social experience) as it relates to cultural safety, person-centred care and the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (NMBA 2016), Code of Ethics (ICN 2021) and Code of Conduct (NMBA 2018). This assessment also facilitates reflection on the cultures of services and systems and on matters on intersectional disadvantage, equitable health systems, impact of racism and power.

Your assessment is private and can only be read by your marker and the unit coordinator.

Reflection Number 1

Developing strong capabilities for reflective practice is a requirement for culturally safe nursing practice. In week 1 and 2 you were introduced to the principles of Cultural Safety. Drawing on what you have learned about cultural safety and culturally safe nursing practice respond to the following.

a) Reflect on your cultural identity and resulting social experience. Describe how these may influence your perspectives and/or views of people that may not be representative of the majority population in Australia. Select one population group from the list below to answer the question.

  • People with mental health challenges,
  • People experiencing disabilities,
  • People relocating from war torn countries and/or refugees,
  • People from a different ethnic culture to yours,
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,
  •  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and those of other sexualities (LGBTQIA+) .

b) Describe how as a nursing student you would provide culturally safe nursing care to a person from one of the above population groups. Use examples that demonstrate culturally safe nursing practice .

c) Reflect on and outline how your examples (in b) are linked to the Code of Conduct (NMBA 2018) regarding culturally safe nursing.

Reflection Number 2

Once you complete your Bachelor of Nursing, you must register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency [AHPRA] to work as a Registered Nurse [RN]. As an RN in the future and nursing student now you must follow regulatory frameworks, standards and codes to maintain your registration.

Read the follow prescribed Week 4 readings:

  • Code of Ethics (ICN 2021)
  • Code of Conduct for Nurses (NMBA 2018)
  • Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (NMBA 2016) Then:

a) Reflect specifically on Principle 3.2 from the Code of Conduct for Nurses from NMBA 2018 (p.10) and use reasoning to explain how this principle relates to Standard 1.2 and 1.3 from Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (NMBA 2016, p. 3) .

b) Identify one health care setting you would like to work at. Outline your reason/s for wanting to work in that setting. Give 3 examples on how as a RN you anticipate you will provide culturally safe patient care in consideration of the likely health care models for that setting (e.g., social model of health, biomedical model of health)

Health care setting examples include:

  • Tertiary care setting (e.g., hospital)
  • Secondary care setting (e.g., specialist clinics, pathology services)
  • Primary care setting (e.g., community health centre, family practice)
  • Geographical location (e.g., rural, regional, urban).

Reflection Number 3

Reflect on your response to the scenario used in tutorial class 3 (week 6) activity 2: cultural safety in Emergency Department mental health presentation where students role played a distressed male who had presented to the Emergency Department on a late Friday night. (See scenario link on canvas).

1. Briefly describe your initial response to this scenario. Draw links between the model and principles of cultural safety and the given scenario, making reference to textbook chapter 4: Cox, L., Taua, C., & Drummond, A. (2021) Enabling cultural safety in Crisp et al. [eds] Potter and Perry’s Fundamentals of Nursing (pp. 50-83) and Principles 2 and/or 3 of the Code of Conduct for Nurses (NMBA 2018) .

2. Reflect and outline how a health service organisation’s policies and culture can influence how culturally safe health care is delivered to people.
