NSG3ANB Subject Summary
This subject will provide you with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required by nurses in the provision of patient-centred care for persons experiencing an acute illness requiring hospitalisation and/or surgery. Through lectures, online activities, workshops, clinical skills laboratories and a clinical placement you will explore patients with acute healthcare concerns across the lifespan experiencing common cardiovascular, respiratory and endocrine diseases and develop more advanced nursing skills. Particular focus will be given to the National Health Priority areas of asthma, hypertension, myocardial infarction and diabetes mellitus. This will enable you to plan and manage patient care safely in a variety of acute care contexts. The clinical practicum will allow you to integrate theoretical principles to the nursing practice of patients with a high acuity. To achieve the learning outcomes of this subject you will be expected to complete a range of written and clinical assessments within a 12-week period
of caring for individuals with time critical needs.

1. Identify common pathophysiology that can result in sudden deterioration of an individual’s condition.
2. Apply the clinical reasoning cycle to provide person-centred care for individuals experiencing sudden deterioration.
3. Demonstrate competence in technical skills when providing person-centred care for individuals experiencing sudden deterioration
4. Articulate the role and responsibilities of a nurse caring for an individual experiencing a sudden deterioration.
5. Develop and awareness of and contribute to the risk management strategies of a healthcare agency
