To create an optical communications system, one needs a source of optical power and a means for modulating that source. An acceptable source for an optical fiber communications system must have specific qualities including the following: emission at a wavelength within a window of low fiber transmission loss, efficient conversion of prime power to light coupled into the fiber, high reliability, ease of modulation, adequate modulation speed capability, sufficient ruggedness, ease of connecting the source output into the fiber, adequately low noise, enough high linearity of modulation, sufficiently narrow spectral width (range of wavelengths in the emitted light), and other more subtle requirements. No source can provide ideal characteristics, but the requirements above exclude many candidate sources either because they are ineffective for the fiber system application or are subordinate to other alternatives. This assessment requires students to analyze and discuss on different optical sources in power optics. The students should develop a comprehensive research report including but not limited to: history of different technologies, applications of each, recent development, pros and cons, market share, and comparing production cost of each technology.
