NU611: Project Design: Evidence-Based Framework for Quality Improvement

Download Solution Order New Solution

Assignment Overview

This assignment requires students to create a structured paper that builds upon a previously identified practice problem or issue. The paper will focus on outlining project participants, defining measurable outcomes, describing data collection methods, addressing cultural and organizational considerations, exploring ethical and HIPAA concerns, and identifying dissemination opportunities. By following a clear rubric and using appropriate APA headings, students will demonstrate their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical quality improvement initiatives.

 Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to help students develop a comprehensive and well-structured plan for addressing a practice problem or issue. It emphasizes critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and ethical considerations while fostering an understanding of organizational and cultural dynamics. This assignment also prepares students to disseminate their findings effectively and professionally.

Skills

By completing this assignment, students will develop the following skills that are necessary for developing a project design for translating evidence into practice.

Task

For this assignment, you are to develop a 6-8 page formal paper for your project design using the headings below.

Introduction: Introduce the practice problem identified in the previous paper. State the purpose of this paper and outline the topics to be discussed.

Participants and Setting: Describe the participants, inclusion/exclusion criteria, sampling technique (probability or non-probability), and the setting where the project will be conducted.

Outcomes: In Assignment #3, you identified best practices that may impact the practice problem or issue. What do you think are going to be the outcomes from the strategy(s) you selected to implement for your quality improvement initiative (I am including the (s) behind the strategy because some of you may have more than one best practice that you are going to use)? Identify at least three measurable outcomes and explain the rationale for each outcome.

Our goal is for you to start thinking about what outcomes would be appropriate to use to evaluate the effectiveness of your program. Make sure your outcomes are measurable and relate directly to the evaluation of your program. In the description of the outcome, identify whether it is a qualitative or a quantitative measure.

Data Collection Methodology and Measurement: What are your ideas about how you will measure these outcomes? What data collection methods are you going to use to measure the outcomes you have selected? What kind of instrument or measurement methodology will be used? Select appropriate data collection methods and instruments. Provide 1 instrument that would be appropriate and discuss the validity and reliability of chosen instrments. This instrument must be something that already exist (do not create a data collection tool for this section). For example, if you are measuring pain, you could include a copy of a visual analog scale or the Wong-Baker FACES pain scale.

Brief Summary of the Assessment Requirements

This assignment requires students to develop a 68 page, APA-formatted project design paper that builds upon a previously identified practice problem. The paper must demonstrate the student's ability to apply evidence-based approaches, integrate theoretical concepts, and plan a quality improvement initiative in a structured and measurable way.

Key Components to Be Covered:

  • Introduction
Reintroduce the practice problem from earlier work
State the purpose of the current paper
Provide an overview of topics to be discussed
  • Participants and Setting
    Define target participants
    Specify inclusion/exclusion criteria
Identify sampling techniques and describe the clinical/organizational setting
  • Outcomes
Identify at least three measurable outcomes tied to best practices selected in earlier assignments
    Provide rationale for each outcome
Clearly state whether each outcome is qualitative or quantitative
  • Data Collection Methodology and Measurement
Describe how each outcome will be measured
Identify data collection methods and instruments
Discuss validity and reliability of one existing, standardized instrument
  • Cultural, Organizational, Ethical, and HIPAA Considerations
Discuss how cultural norms, organizational practices, and compliance factors influence project implementation
  • Dissemination Strategy
Identify where and how the results can be presented (e.g., conferences, journals, organizational meetings)

The final paper must follow APA headings, demonstrate critical thinking, show understanding of ethical implications, and align selected outcomes with quality improvement goals.

How the Academic Mentor Guided the Student

Step 1: Reviewing the Practice Problem

The mentor began by revisiting the practice problem identified in the student’s previous paper.
They ensured the student understood how the current assignment builds upon prior work, forming a logical continuation.

Step 2: Structuring the Paper

The mentor guided the student to map out APA-compliant headings, ensuring the structure followed the rubric exactly.
This helped the student create a clear outline before writing.

Step 3: Writing the Introduction

The mentor advised:

  • Briefly restating the previously examined practice issue
  • Clearly stating the purpose of the project design paper
  • Listing the main sections that will be included

This ensured the introduction served as a roadmap for the reader.

Step 4: Defining Participants and Setting

The mentor helped the student:

  • Identify the correct participant population
  • Draft clear inclusion and exclusion criteria
  • Choose an appropriate sampling method (probability or non-probability)
  • Describe the clinical or organizational environment

This section established the foundational context for the project.

Step 5: Developing Measurable Outcomes

The mentor guided the student through:

  • Linking outcomes to the best practices previously identified
  • Ensuring every outcome was SMART, measurable, and directly tied to the problem
  • Distinguishing between qualitative and quantitative outcomes
  • Writing a rationale for why each outcome mattered

The focus was on aligning outcomes with project evaluation needs.

Step 6: Selecting Data Collection Methods

The mentor supported the student in:

  • Identifying the most appropriate ways to measure each outcome
  • Selecting a valid, reliable instrument already established in research
  • Explaining psychometric properties (validity and reliability)
  • Aligning instruments with outcomes to maintain methodological rigor

This ensured the methods section was both evidence-based and practical.

Step 7: Addressing Cultural, Organizational, and Ethical Considerations

The mentor encouraged the student to:

  • Consider cultural aspects of the participant group
  • Describe organizational influences and potential barriers
  • Discuss ethical expectations including informed consent, confidentiality, and HIPAA compliance

This strengthened the ethical dimension of the project plan.

Step 8: Identifying Dissemination Opportunities

The mentor advised the student to choose dissemination platforms such as:

  • Professional conferences
  • Peer-reviewed journals
  • Institutional presentations

This prepared the student for real-world application of results.

Step 9: Final Review and APA Compliance

The mentor reviewed the paper for:

  • Flow and coherence
  • Correct use of APA headings
  • Accurate in-text citations and reference formatting
  • Logical alignment between problem, outcomes, and methods

This ensured the final submission met academic expectations.

Final Outcome and Learning Objectives Achieved
