Part 1: Essay
You will need to structure your essay as per standard SNM assignment presentation guidelines. The guide below is just a guide; it is not designed for you just to insert information as you did in Assessment 1 or as you will do for the appendix for this assignment. If you did just insert information in the boxes below, it would not be an essay, and there would be significant impact on the marks awarded for the assignment.

Question

In 900 words, discuss the three pillars of EBP: best research evidence, clinical expertise and individual patient needs, what they represent, why they are important, etc. The essay will require an introduction and conclusion (10% of word count each). As that leaves approximately 720 words, it is suggested that you write one paragraph (240 words approximately) on each pillar of EBP.

Introduction
The introduction should contain some very general background information to “set the scene” for your reader. As this information is very general, it should not require references. The more specific information that requires references should be in a body paragraph. The introduction should contain a thesis statement that states the principal argument for your essay. The final sentence of the introduction should outline the main ideas to be discussed (“This essay will discuss …”). As definitions are specific, it is preferable to include then in a body paragraph, but not the first sentence of a paragraph because that should be a topic sentence.

Discussion

Each body paragraph should commence with a topic sentence that identifies the main topic for that paragraph. The topic sentence should not require a reference. The next few sentences provide your discussion/argument on the topic which should be supported with reference to scholarly literature. The final sentence of your paragraph should either summarise content or link to the next paragraph. As such, the final sentence should not require references.

Conclusion

The conclusion should summarise the topics discussed/argued and show how your thesis statement (originally stated in the introduction) has been proven. As you are summarising, there should be no need for references and no new information included in the conclusion that was not discussed in the body paragraphs. Finish your conclusion with a concluding statement.

No headings

There should be no headings or sub-headings in an essay. As the essay is a story or narrative about the main topic, the milestones and directions included in the narrative should guide readers through the story without the need for headings. Headings are more likely to be included in a formal report than in an essay.

No bullet points or lists
Again, because the essay is a narrative, there should be no dot points, bullets or numbered lists. Any information being presented should be incorporated into the narrative so that it progresses logically and smoothly. Try to avoid just presenting information. That does not demonstrate your understanding of information, only your ability to locate it. Instead, you need to incorporate the results of your searches into your discussion, thus proving that you have a good understanding of the information you are presenting.

References

The reference list (APA 7 th ) needs to be inserted directly after the essay, but on a separate page. The reference list is inserted before the appendix because the resources were used to support the essay only, not the appendix. The appendix will have its own reference list.

Part 2: Article critique (Appendix)
Although you would not copy straight from an article when compiling other assignments (because that would be academic misconduct), you may do so on this occasion because you are actually identifying certain segments/contents of the article.
