Task Two
Background Information
Reflection is a way of thinking and working for Registered Nurses and is useful in raising our conscious awareness of aspects of care that may be hidden from our view. This raised awareness about these aspects of care improves our understanding as nurses and assist us in directing action strategies that can improve both the patient and their family’s experience and the ‘partnering in care’ strategies that we utilise. Improving the ‘patient care experience and partnering in care’ and using Gibbs 6 Stage Reflection Cycle (adapted version by Burns & Bulman 2000) as a framework in combination with drawing upon relevant literature/(theory) provides a foundation for nurses to operate from and as such is required for Task 2.
Instructions:
Choose ONE of the following Age Patient Experience and Partnering in Care Interviews:
1. Age 60 Australian Female Patient Experience
2. Age 70 Australian Male Patient Experience
The Age 60 and 70 Patient Experienceand Partnering in Care Interview Recordings are located on the leftside of the NUR1201Study Desk page, under the label ‘Panopto’.
1. Write a 1500 word reflective essay using Gibbs Six Stage Reflection Cycle (adapted version by Burns & Bulman 2000) as a framework,on one of the above Age 60 or 70 Patient Experience and Partnering in Care interviews and reflect ontheir care experience in a balanced way.
The main focus of the reflection needs to be on TWO topics:
1. Falls prevention and harm from falls care
2. Care information related to My Health e-Record.
The final aim of this reflection is for you to make recommendations on how to improve the future care experiences of patients in that age group and their families generally and specifically in relation to these two topics.
To support your reflective essay, include relevant literature / (theory) (refer to point number 2.) you will draw upon, to support your reflection of either the Age 60 OR Age 70 Patient Experience and partnering in care, as well as to recommend and justify future partnering in care strategies to improve the Age 60 OR 70 Age Patient Experience.
2. Relevant literature/ (theory):
Nursing philosophy (for example, person centred and or family centred care; holistic care)
A nursing governance and specific Standard/or Value statement or Principle (for example, Code of Conduct for Nurses; The ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses; Registered Nurse Standards for Practice)
A National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard(for example Standard1, 2 and 5)
Erikson’s 8 Stage framework (focus on a relevant stage)
Other relevant readings (for example any of your weekly NUR1201 readings and or independent research using the USQ library data bases)
3. Gibbs Six Stage Reflection Cycle (adapted version by Burns & Bulman 2000) as the reflective essay structure/ framework. See below for the structure. Remembering, not to include the subheadings in your reflective essay.
Introduction
Body of essay
Stage One: Description
Describe the patient’s experience overall, in a general but succinct and balanced manner. Within this general description, aim to draw out a particular relevant aspect. Next, detail whether the patients experience included falls prevention and harm from falls care, as well as care information related to My Health e-Record. From this description you have written, identify two themes and briefly justify these themes of care focus.
Stage Two: Feelings and Thoughts
Describe and examine your feelings and thoughts in response to your description. Identify the values and beliefs that connect you to your feelings and thoughts and evaluate your response to the patient’s experience in terms of those feelings and thoughts. For example, why did you feel that way? (Link your response back to Stage 1)
Stage Three: Values and Beliefs
Describe some of your values and beliefs that may have impacted on your feelings and thoughts about what went on. After reflecting about the ‘Values and Beliefs’ that connect
to your feelings and thoughts, identify where these values and beliefs originate from? Why are these values and beliefs important? Who are they important to and why? Are they important to you, the patient and the patient’s family? (Link your response back to Stage 1 & 2).
(One paragraph: Word count guide:200 words)
Stage Four: Analysis

Draw upon some literature to support your analysis of the case scenario and relate it to the scenario by providing examples. Aim to make sense of this patient experience in terms of how you reacted to it. Link this analysis to your responses to Stages 1-3.
Stage Five: Conclusions Drawn
Identify the conclusions/new meanings that can be drawn here. Link these conclusions to your responses to Stages 1-4.
Stage Six: Action Plan
Recommend suitable partnering in care’ strategies to improve the future care experiences for your Age 60 or 70 patient and their families generally and specifically in relation to these two topics.
