Task detail

Background Information

Patients and families are often on the receiving end of care and are thus positioned well to reflect, comment and share their care experience to key stakeholders whose goals are to improve patient safety, quality of care and the patient/family experience. Improving the patient care experience can be challenging and nurses need to be equipped with knowledge about relevant evidenced based theory to help them inform their care practice. For example the nursing governances and nursing philosophies that guide the application of nursing care practice, and other related theory/ contemporary evidenced based literature and strategies that will help engage nurses with patients and their families to improve their future care experiences.

Instructions:

Reflect on YOUR learning journey within the course ‘NUR1201 The Patient Experience and Partnering in Care’. A common idea dominated throughout this semester – the benefit of understanding the patient experience and partnering in care with patients/families to improve safety, quality of care and the patient/family experience.

  1. Write a 1050-word reflection about YOUR learning journey within the course ‘NUR1201 The Patient Experience and Partnering in Care’ using:

  • The Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988) (adapted version by Burns & Bulman, 2000) that includes the following six stages.

  1. Description; 2. Feelings and Thoughts; 3. Values and Beliefs; 4. Analysis; 5. Conclusions Drawn; 6. Action Plan.

To support your reflection, draw on relevant literature (theory) learned throughout the semester (See the Weekly worksheet and point number 2. Relevant literature (below) and your choice of anyone of the NUR1201 Weekly patient experience, as examples to support your points in the reflection. Finally, in Stage 6 Action Plan, list partnering in care strategies you will implement in your clinical care practice as a student nurse and future role as a Registered Nurse. Additionally, justify these partnering in care strategies.

  1. Relevant literature (theory):

  1. nursing philosophy (for example, person centred and or family centred care; holistic care)

  2. a nursing governance and specific Standard/or Value statement or Principle (for example, Code of Conduct for Nurses; The ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses; Registered Nurse Standards for Practice)

  3. a National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard (for example Standard 2, Partnering with Consumers)

  4. Erikson’s 8 Stage framework (focus on a relevant stage)

  5. Other relevant readings (for example any of your weekly NUR1201 readings)

Other information: Do not include an Introduction or Conclusion.

Use subheadings for each of the Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988) (adapted version by Burns & Bulman, 2000).
